Rally Against Illegal Immigration Scheduled
Radio Hosts Enlisted in Effort, Which Is Aimed at Rousing Area Activists Before Week of Lobbying

By Pamela Constable and N.C. Aizenman
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, April 22, 2007; C01

As the debate over immigration reform takes shape in Congress, radio talk show hosts will headline a rally against illegal immigration across from the White House today as a preamble to a week of lobbying on Capitol Hill.

Organizers hope the radio personalities, whose shows across the country often are forums for heated anti-immigrant rhetoric, will galvanize an array of groups into a potent force. The effort is aimed at reflecting grass-roots concerns raised by Washington area residents, such as over job centers for mostly immigrant day laborers in Herndon and Gaithersburg.

"We all see the illegal aliens marching down the streets, screaming, 'We are America' and 'We demand citizenship.' We are trying to offer a venue where Americans can come and express their support for secure borders and an equal application of existing laws," said D.A. King, an ex-Marine from Georgia who leads the Dustin Inman Society, which is sponsoring the rally.

Surveys show that a majority of Americans favor tightening security along the border with Mexico. But the public is divided on how to treat the more than 10 million illegal immigrants who live in the United States.

A recent Washington Post poll found that 81 percent of people said the government was "not doing enough" to stop illegal immigration. But 62 percent said those already in the country should be offered a chance to keep their jobs and apply for legal immigration status, while 35 percent said they should be deported.

Most legislative proposals call for some path toward legalization for those in the country illegally.

Organizers of today's demonstration say they plan to focus on three issues: improving border security, opposing amnesty for immigrants living illegally in the country and enforcing U.S. laws, including those against hiring illegal immigrants.

In the Washington region, activists said, many residents have strong negative opinions about illegal immigration but are fearful of being labeled anti-Latino if they speak out. The activists also said people tend to become more energized by problems in their communities, such as loitering laborers or crowded housing, than by national policy debates.

"People don't want to be vilified or called racists. They will send an anonymous e-mail but not go to meetings," said George Taplin, who heads the Virginia chapter of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, an Arizona-based group that has led efforts to seal the U.S.-Mexico border. Taplin said some local activists may go to the rally, but only if they belong to national groups.

Greg Letiecq, an activist from Manassas, said that the rally was "a wonderful idea" but that it would be difficult to persuade a sizable group of residents to take part, even though many are concerned about local problems associated with illegal immigrants, especially crowded housing.

"People send me e-mails saying we need to do something, but they don't have the time, the vision or the background to pull it off," he said.

There is clearly a strong undercurrent of anger against illegal immigrants among area residents. In Herndon, plans to open a job site for immigrant day laborers last year led to a protracted fight that bitterly divided the town and drew national media attention. A similar proposal in Gaithersburg also aroused local opposition, although the center opened last week without incident.

Reports in The Post about the problems of illegal immigrants regularly elicit floods of angry e-mails and online messages, often anonymous.

Some of the worries are specific, such as complaints that immigrants overburden schools and hospitals or bring gang violence. Others are vague and emotional. They include fears of being inundated by foreigners, indignation at expensive accommodations made to newcomers who do not speak English and concern that the quality of community life is deteriorating. The complaints often express frustration with the government, which is seen as having done little to address the overall problem.

Here is a sampling of recent messages:

"I don't feel sorry for illegal aliens who broke our laws crossing our borders."

"When you get people who don't respect the law, you have a country that doesn't respect the law."

"I am so tired of watching Latinos in my neighborhood . . . leaving their empty Corona bottles all over the yard."

"Why are all of these people still speaking only Spanish after so many years?"

"The emergency rooms in my town are packed. . . . all our money is going to these illegals. . . . I am simply out of sympathy."

"They [are] taking our jobs."

"If they are criminals they deserve no help."

"Wait in line like my grandparents did."

"Do something to fix your problems at home rather than just running away and becoming another country's problem."

"If we do not defend ourselves there will be no USA at all worth having."

"Deport them all."

Many speakers scheduled to address the rally represent national or regional advocacy groups that draw on common sources of funding and have overlapping boards or staffs.

In many cases, the common denominator is John Tanton, a Michigan ophthalmologist who founded the influential lobbying group Federation for American Immigration Reform about three decades ago.

Of 15 speakers, at least seven have links to either FAIR or Tanton's private foundation, U.S. Inc. K.C. McAlpin is executive director of ProEnglish, a wholly owned project of U.S. Inc. Radio host Terry Anderson has received thousands of dollars in funding from U.S. Inc. and is a founder of a group of African Americans opposed to illegal immigration that FAIR helped create. Col. Al Rodriguez is chairman of a group that FAIR co-organized for Latinos opposed to illegal immigration.

One speaker, Roger Hedgecock, has achieved a national following. He is a conservative radio host in San Diego whose show has long been a lightning rod for sentiment against illegal immigrants. Hedgecock's aides said the organizers hope to bring more than 1,000 supporters from California and other states, who will spend the week visiting members of Congress and holding other events.

In contrast to this scripted plan, a year ago, several million mostly Latino immigrants unexpectedly poured into the streets of Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago and other cities to protest immigration legislation in Congress. The largely spontaneous burst of activism astonished the nation and appeared to signal a political coming of age for the country's large Latino population.

There is no indication that pro-immigrant or Latino groups will be out in force today, but a group calling itself D.C. Students for a Democratic Society has called for a noisy counter-demonstration. It has circulated unsigned fliers titled "Nobody is Illegal!" that ask supporters to bring noisemakers and signs.

One reason for the pent-up frustration over illegal immigration is that Congress has failed to produce immigration reform for the past several years, although some activists argue that no new law is needed. Last year's proposals collapsed in partisan fighting, and the divide is even more poisonous this year, with predictions that no final bill will emerge.

At the state level, proposals aimed at denying benefits to illegal immigrants have been defeated in the Virginia and Maryland legislatures in the past several years. Activists blame business interests that employ illegal immigrants for the defeats, but others said the growing influence of Latino and immigrant-rights groups has played a role.

Taplin said the high-profile controversy over the Herndon day-labor site had begun to galvanize longtime residents in other area communities. He said his organization is now working with groups in Manassas, Culpeper and Harrisonburg in Virginia, where large numbers of illegal immigrants work in farming, poultry plants and the service sector.

"Herndon has given people more courage," he said. "We are trying to get the grass roots going, and we have thousands of supporters. For most people, it's only a matter of keeping your head down until you're sure it's okay to put it up."

Hold Their Feet to the Fire 2007 Set to Bring 34 Radio Talk Shows and Hundreds of Listeners to Washington to Demand Immigration Enforcement

Thousands More Will Lobby From Home as Part of a National Campaign

WASHINGTON, April 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As President Bush once again stumps for an immigration reform package that would include a massive new guest worker program and a sweeping illegal alien amnesty, 34 local and nationally syndicated radio talk show programs, along with hundreds of their listeners, are set to come to Washington the week of April 22 to demand that Congress and the Bush Administration honor past promises to secure the nation's borders and crackdown on employers who hire illegal aliens. "Hold Their Feet to the Fire 2007," organized by San Diego talk radio host Roger Hedgecock and the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), will include an historic level of talk radio hosts all in one location, representing the entire country, broadcasting from a "Radio Row" site at the Phoenix Park Hotel on Capitol Hill Monday through Wednesday while hundreds of their listeners and hundreds of FAIR activists fan out across the Capitol visiting every member of Congress. Dozens of additional talk radio programs will devote their programming that week to immigration enforcement, while thousands of citizens call or meet with their representatives' district staffs.

"Hold Their Feet to the Fire is the American public's opportunity to demonstrate their passionate belief that U.S. immigration must protect the interests of the American people, and not be given over to a bunch of cheap labor interests, or reward millions of people who have broken the law," said Dan Stein, president of FAIR. "Our constituency, which represents the views of the vast majority of Americans, are not the type who take to the streets for mass protests. But they are the type of people who vote, and this is one of a handful of issues that will determine who they vote for or against."

"Talk radio has turned into a barometer of public sentiment," observed Roger Hedgecock. "Turn on a radio anywhere from my home base in San Diego to Maine, and you are guaranteed to hear the voices of ordinary Americans who believe passionately that mass illegal immigration is the most serious domestic problem this nation faces. These folks represent a true cross-section of the American population, and they are outraged that the president and Congress are preparing to reward millions of people who are breaking our laws, and undermine the middle class with a massive new guest worker program."

All Hold Their Feet to the Fire events and participants will be open and available to the media. These include:
-- Radio Row Broadcasting daily from the Phoenix Park Hotel.
-- Screening of Chris Burgard's film "Border," at Union Station Phoenix Theater, 6 pm Monday April 23, with opening remarks by G. Gordon Liddy.
-- Reception and fundraiser for imprisoned Border Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean, 7-9 pm, Tuesday April 24, Phoenix Park Hotel.

A 'Comprehensive' Solution to Illegal Immigration
by Martha Zoller
Posted: 04/10/2007

In summer 2005, Esmeralda Nava, was a 4-year-old whose parents were illegal immigrant day laborers who had been in the United States a short time. It is unclear what the status of Cornelio Rivera Zamites was in 2005. It is believed he was deported in 2003; however he was in the U.S. illegally in late spring 2005. Had our laws been enforced, neither Nava nor Zamites would have been in the U.S. and Nava would be alive today. The only good that came of this horrible rape and murder of a child was the immigrant community saw law enforcement pursue and apprehend the suspect with every resource they had. That year, of the 13 murders in our county --11 arrests were made and eight of those arrests were illegal immigrants.

“Comprehensive” -- as it relates to immigration reform -- is one of those words that creates an instant picture. It’s like affirmative action or liberal or conservative, the mere use of the phrase or word conjures up a complete image of the subject. “Comprehensive” has come to mean in the immigration debate a simultaneous change in policy including a guest-worker program and border security with many concessions being made with American taxpayer dollars to accommodate illegal immigrants in America. Any plan that has been put forward in Congress or discussed on the airwaves or in the diners and town halls of American cities dealing with rampant illegal immigration can be called comprehensive. But to define “comprehensive” -- as the lefties and open border advocates do -- that this term separates those who want only to close the border from those who want to deal with the other aspects of illegal immigration -- misleads willfully. Nevetheless, it is true that it must be borders first.

The average American that is looking at this problem has no faith that the federal government can do anything simultaneously or comprehensively, There is no model either in previous attempts to control immigration or any other federal program that would give the American people confidence that the implementation will go smoothly.

Immigration positions have less to do with party and more to do with where you live and to what degree you are dealing with illegal immigration. In addition, it’s not just a border state problem anymore. I recently appeared on CSPAN with a U.S. Chamber of Commerce panel on immigration reform and have received calls from all over the country. It’s not just a border state problem.

The discussion should not be about limiting immigration but managing it. This should occur in the context that it means something to be an American. American culture is unique and worth preserving. “American Exceptionalism” is why people continue to come here. Today, we allow legal immigration to this country totaling more than all other countries in the world combined. In addition, if visas were granted to every person that is currently applying for them around the world, we would take in over 40 million additional people this year. With all the talk about whether people like America or not, they still want what we have which is the opportunity to rise above your station with hard work. We cannot, however, have unbridled immigration and the control of immigration is one of the few things that are actually enumerated in the Constitution of the United States.

So what is the solution? Talk to the people who are on the front lines of this problem, local law enforcement, and they will tell you what will work. First, make English the official language of the U.S. and require that all citizens are proficient in English. Then, secure the borders by whatever means necessary. It is not just a fence or border patrol, it is many solutions -- it is comprehensive. We know just a presence on the border deters crossings. Even the Drug Enforcement Administration had to acknowledge that the presence of the Minutemen on the border deterred the transport of illegal drugs across the border in 2006. We are going to be in the deserts of the Middle East and Afghanistan for a long time, so let’s use our training wisely and train the military on the border and deter crossings except at legal ports of entry. A combination of methods could be used but the goal is to prevent crossings anywhere but at checkpoints.

Next, implement a guest-worker program that requires that illegal immigrants go back to their home country to get the proper paperwork. Streamline the process to 14 days or less. Drivers’ licenses must only be given to immigrants with verifiable, valid visas and those licenses must expire when the visa expires.

Serious penalties should be levied on employers who employ undocumented workers, including the construction and hospitality industry. Allow employers and state welfare workers to verify documentation through a database they can access with current immigrant and visa information. In the early part of the 1900s, one million immigrants were processed a year with hand written entries for each person. If we could do it by hand then, we can do it now.

Local law enforcement must be given more jurisdiction over illegal immigrants in their own communities. Illegal immigrants who commit crimes must be tried in American courts and, if convicted, serve their entire sentences in American prisons. This seems on the surface to be harsh, but there is know evidence that their home governments, particularly Mexico, will prosecute them, and deportation will result in an unstoppable revolving door of violent crime in America. This is especially true with gang activity. The growth of gangs, especially MS 13, cannot be allowed and must be crushed with the full force of American law enforcement. The gang mentality is the terrorist mentality and cannot be allowed to flourish.

Immigration policies should be enforced. We should support immigration, but it needs to be legal immigration. American taxpayers have been more than generous with their time talents and their hard earned dollars. There is no government without the taxpayers, and the taxpayers insist on a certain level of respect for America, for American culture, and for the laws that provide an unprecedented amount of freedom for American citizens. Citizenship matters and is a valuable asset. There is no culture in the world that will offer more opportunity to immigrants but they must enter and exit our country legally and respect our culture and laws while they are here.

Comprehensive immigration reform should not necessarily be a path to citizenship. If an immigrant wants to become a citizen, then they have to meet certain criteria. We have a rich tradition of opening our arms to the world but we must never forget or be sorry that it is a privilege to come and live and work in the U.S. It is worth having and it is worth defending and enforcement of laws is the basis of that and has to be.

If you care about this issue, join me and people all over the country at “Hold Their Feet To the Fire” in Washington, D.C. from April 22-25.

Radio hosts lead charge to free Ramos, Compean
D.C. rally to hold lawmakers' 'feet to the fire' over agents' imprisonment

Dozens of radio talk-show hosts from across the nation are uniting with an immigration group for a Capitol Hill rally to pressure Congress to defeat an illegal alien amnesty bill, protect the border, and support the Border Patrol, including imprisoned former agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.

Texas radio talk-show host Edd Hendee, working with colleagues such as Roger Hedgecock and Howie Carr, wants the agents to be freed and the prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton, fired. The "Hold Their Feet to the Fire 2007" rally is planned for April 22-25 by the Federation for American Immigration Reform in Washington, D.C. The rally will include 19 straight hours of talk-show broadcasting by various hosts.

Ramos and Compean are in federal prison serving 11 and 12 year sentences for their actions in the shooting of a drug smuggler, Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila-Aldrete, as he fled back to Mexico after driving across the border with a load of 742 pounds of marijuana in February 2005. Sutton gave the smuggler use immunity to serve as the government's star witness and testify against the border agents.

Hendee's call to remove Sutton comes after news of the arrest of Cipriano Ortiz-Hernandez, the stash house operator involved in a second drug smuggling attempt Aldrete-Davila made, after being given immunity.

"When a U.S. attorney allows a Mexican national like Ortiz-Hernandez to operate a drug stash house without being arrested for almost two years, there's no excuse," Hendee told WND. "It's a clear dereliction of duty on the part of Johnny Sutton."

Hendee pointed out it's now known that millions of dollars worth of marijuana went through Ortiz-Hernandez's home in Clint, Texas, over a two-year period.

"Ortiz-Hernandez should have been indicted and arrested so his whole operation could have been busted up and put out of business, long before Aldrete-Davila showed up to drop off his second 'October load,'" Hendee said.

Hendee hosts a morning show on KSEV in Houston and KVCE
http://www.kvceradio.com/ in Dallas–Fort Worth.

The radio host said he's asking listeners to call their representatives and urge the lawmakers "to go on record and call immediately for Sutton's removal."

Hendee said he intends to poll the Texas congressional delegation and interview them on the radio.

The trial transcript in the Ramos-Compean case shows prosecutors successfully sought to have Judge Kathleen Cardone seal all information about Aldrete-Davila's second drug bust from the jury, despite defense arguments that the information about that incident – as documented in Department of Homeland Security and Drug Enforcement Administration investigative reports – went to the heart of the smuggler's credibility.

"This is clearly an issue we intend to bring before the voters," Hendee told WND, "and the voters have a right to know where their elected representatives in Washington stand on the issue of firing Johnny Sutton."

Bob Dane, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, told WND the rally plans to host a 5 a.m.-to-midnight continuous radio row broadcast from the Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington.

"We're planning to hold the largest media immigration event of the year," Wade said. "Most talk show hosts are coming to town to say 'No' to amnesty."

FAIR has created a Border Patrol Family Fund, called "Defend Those Who Defend Us," for Ramos and Compean. The fund will be split between the two families at the rally banquet April 24.

Among the broadcasters scheduled to attend the FAIR rally are:

* Hedgecock, KOGO-AM, San Diego

* Carr, WRKO-AM and syndicated, Boston

* John and Ken, KFI-AM, Los Angeles

* WND columnist Les Kinsolving, WCBM-AM, Baltimore

* Janet Parshall, Salem Radio Network

* Armstrong Williams, WWRL, New York

* Phil Valentine, Westwood One, Nashville

Accuracy in Media notes some of the biggest names in conservative talk radio are missing and urges listeners to contact Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck and Michael Reagan to see if they plan to attend or give the event publicity.

Historic Coalition Going to DC to stop Amnesty for Illegal Aliens

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
4/2/2007

Tel: (919) 787-6009 Toll Free: (866) 329-3999

A historic coalition of organizations plan to converge on Washington, DC on April 22-26 to carry the message from the American public to lawmakers that America needs comprehensive immigration enforcement and not amnesty to deal with illegal immigration.

ALIPAC has launched a website at www.HoldTheirFeetToTheFire.org dubbed 'Amnesty Alamo', which will help promote events and attendance for these historic events and to enhance the efforts already in place by radio show host Rodger Hedgecock, Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform (FAIR), DA King of the Dustin Inman Society called 'Hold Their Feet to The Fire'.

"We are planning a historic effort in Washington to stop this Scamnesty," says William Gheen of ALIPAC. "This legislation reflects a radical Open Borders agenda that must be stopped because a majority of Americans oppose it. We need enforcement of our existing immigration laws, not legislation that radically suspends our existing laws, as the Flake Gutierrez legislation does. This is not just amnesty legislation. This legislation will end America as we know it."

The efforts in DC will be supported by citizen activists that are going to Washington by the thousands and by citizens at home engaged in the lobbying effort. The events will start on Sunday April 22, with a rally in Lafayette Park across from the White House set up by DA King. FAIR will hold a lobbying training session set up, with Roger Hedcock's 'Radio Row' and "Blogger Row", which includes over 34 talk radio show hosts and bloggers that oppose amnesty. The show hosts and bloggers will be broadcasting live from the Phoenix Hotel calling on all Americans to join the effort.

The effort is open to any non-racist organizations that wants to participate. Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, 9/11 Families for a Secure America, NumbersUSA, and many other organizations are going to DC as well.

A Letter from William Gheen President of ALIPAC

Friends,

The time has come for us to make history once again and to throw all of our resources behind an effort to block the amnesty legislation the big corporations are planning up in Washington DC.

While the task may appear daunting due to the high level of influence the special interests have in DC, the American public is on our side regardless of any cooked polls you may see. We need your help to fight Scamnesty with all of our combined might.

ALIPAC is calling on all of our civilian activists, allied leaders and organizations, and media contacts to engage in these efforts.

Our goals are to 1. Get as many people as possible to go to Washington, DC (April 22-26) and into the offices of members of the US Congress and Senate to lobby against Guest Worker Amnesty, 2. To get as many people that cannot be in DC on the phones to reinforce our efforts, and 3. To schedule as many office and event visits as possible in the districts to send a clear message.

For success in blocking Scamnesty, we will need everyone to work on their own and together as a team as much as possible.

We will need a clear message. The message is that any legislation that gives any legalized status or that allows illegal aliens to stay in the US or leave for short periods of time before returning "touchback" is Amnesty. The only thing that will stop and reverse illegal immigration is for illegal aliens to return to their own nations, with a story for their neighbors about how their ill gotten gains in America did not pan out.

A more complete description of how we can deport with attrition and compel millions of illegal aliens to leave on their own accord is detailed in our platform document "How To Reverse Illegal Immigration In America" found at
http://www.alipac.us/article1111-thread-1-0.html

Please check your schedules and take immediate action to join us in Washington. We have set up a promotional website, to enhance the existing "Hold Their Feet To The Fire" events put on by Roger Hedgecock and FAIR (Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform).

We have over 34 top talk radio show personalities that will be broadcasting live from the events. This 'Radio Row' will be supported by bloggers forming a "Blogger Row" and we want to hear from any bloggers that are willing to promote and join this effort.

If you join our efforts on the phone and in DC, you will receive a set of instructions and talking points to help defeat Amnesty soon. There are several critical flaws in this legislation that we will focus on, in our efforts to lobby and warn our fellow Americans.

What we need most is you in DC. It does not matter if you have never lobbyied before. There will be training sessions and anyone can do this. If you absolutely cannot be in DC, we need your help on the phones.

Please help us spread the word and set up links to the promotional website. Please visit this website today for help with lodging and transportation or to keep up with the full schedule of events, as the list is updated and to sign up to help in DC or with calls.

We need your support to make history. We need to do everything we can to stop Amnesty now!

We hope to see you soon at www.HoldTheirFeetToTheFire.org

Please sign up to receive e-mail updates at this site so we can keep you posted on event updates and what you can do to play an important role in this battle.

ALIPAC will have a command center set up in DC to help you with this effort.

We are going to DC to stop Amnesty! We are taking you with us! Let's roll!

The Amnesty Alamo Project

The Amnesty Alamo Project is an effort launched by Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC), and other allied organizations found on the supporters page, to greatly increase the number of people going to Washington DC to oppose Amnesty as part of Hold Their Feet to the Fire 2007.

This website was created to help promote and coordinate this historic effort. By combining the efforts of many groups and leaders, our movement can put more people into the offices in DC April 22-26 and we can get more people on the phones as our citizen activists go office to office.

The Amnesty Alamo Project plans to bring at least ten prominent bloggers to DC to join Roger Hedgecock and FAIR's 'Radio Row'. The addition of "Blogger Row" will marry the two forms of media that have worked together to build the modern anti-illegal immigration movement.

Together, the bloggers and talk radio shows form the New Media that can warn American and move America into historic action to STOP AMNESTY!

Hold Their Feet to the Fire and The Amnesty Alamo Project are open to any non violent and non racist organization that is willing to stand with us against Amnesty.

You can help by linking in to this site and distributing invitations to all of your e-mail contacts asking them to visit this site and to join us in DC or on the phones for three days. You can help by coming to DC or joining us on the phones.

Please consider signing up on the homepage to participate and receive e-mail updates because you will need to receive important information about events as they are added to the schedule.

Please visit the schedule section of this site to keep abreast of events as they are added.

Please visit the lodging and travel section of the site as we work to help you find the most affordable ways to get to DC and be there for these historic events.

Lobbying congress in person and by phone is something that anyone can do. Will you rise to the challenge to save America?

We know that a majority of Americans oppose Amnesty for illegal aliens in all forms and it is up to us to deliver that message. We must also deliver the wisdom that if illegal aliens currently in America are allowed to stay then it will be almost impossible for us to stop the next 20 million!

It is time to take a stand America. It is time for us to make History. Please join us in our efforts here.
